Puppies!

Are you selling your puppy short?

Teaching stationary behaviors with a tiny puppy can be an exercise in frustration (puppy is napping?) but even if it’s not, you might not be making the best of the opportunity to work around other people and dogs. Early puppy education is best when it teaches your puppy how to learn many new things, and not get stuck with boring stationary behaviors.

Puppy class can be the easiest time to teach your puppy that YOU are more important than any other person or dog, and to practice social greetings only when cued to do so, and to come away from social greetings immediately when called. Puppy classes can help you prepare your dog for off leash walks, knowing that other people and dogs are mostly “not your problem” but instead these social opportunities are times to pay special attention to the handler and follow instructions.

This is a puppy class that will teach you how to use play to teach your puppy,  strengthen your bond, condition great behaviors, and build confidence in your learning language. You’ll learn how you can control your environment to prevent mistakes and get your puppy in the habit of making great choices, right from the start!

6 sessions, for fully vaccinated young dogs, starts April 1, date/time TBD. $240 Held at Bliss Woods Farm. Register below.

When you choose your puppy, you are choosing a training plan.  Is your puppy big, small, herding instinct, hunting instinct, shy, assertive? When you choose a dog or puppy you are making a decision about your lifestyle with your dog, and which things you will really have to train and which things will “come naturally.”  Picking the puppy can be so much fun, but it’s also where I see people making mistakes. I actually made my own “mistakes” in choosing puppies over the years (I’ve personally owned 8 of my own, and trained over 350 dogs that belong to clients) too, so I know that we can live and learn, and my shy “mistake” puppy taught me so much about animal behavior and training!

We can grow through small mistakes when choosing a pup, but unfortunately sometimes people get saddled with situations that ultimately result in having to rehome a dog, or just having training problems that would not have been training problems if the dog had been matched correctly with the home habitat.

I can help you pick out the perfect puppy. Join our group class with other families, and talk “puppies!” Share your experiences in visiting breeders and shelters with other families making the same journey. Maybe you don’t even really need a little puppy, but you’re looking at older dogs?  Are you thinking about getting a service dog? Jenny has special experience in training hearing service, alert and retrieve and delivery behaviors. Her dogs have also worked as therapy dogs. She can help you pick out, train and license your pet dog, therapy or your hearing/senior service puppy. Contact Whole Dog Camp to be informed of our next group class.
